Welcome to my fishing blog!
The reason for this post is that  I have been seeing a lot of people talking about buying a boat. A young man on this site, a member of WA lakes is looking at an older boat for a lot of money. Another was talking about the quality of the newer aluminum models. Well here is some advice. When I bought my boat 2 years ago I bought it new. I was very leery about buying new just because of the poor quality of things these days. I have been pleasantly surprised, however and am very happy with my rig. I think that you really have to do your homework when you buy, new or used. Figure out what you want and research the boat. Check out All of the competing companies that make your style of boat, because they are competing for your business.
For example, When I was shopping for my boat I new I wanted a multi-species style deep V. I knew that Yamaha, Stratos, And Tracker made these style of boats so I researched the companies and the products. It takes time but you are spending a lot of money so take the time.
The salesman at the Yamaha dealer lied to me right away. I new I didn't want a riveted boat. I looked at the G3. Now I don't know about you guys but I know a rivet when I see it. There were at least 1000 rivets in this boat but he stood there and said that it was all welded. Out with Yamaha! By By . Stratos did not make an aluminum model so that was that.
When I checked out the Tracker model I was surprised at the quality for the price but I wasn't convinced. The salesman, Who also was a tournament fisherman sold me. It took me 2 months to do my research before I bought and I am happy I did it.
So take your time. I know that for people that have never owned a boat, the first time is so exciting. You just want to jump in and buy the first thing you see. Be careful! Know what you want. Ask the hard questions, especially if you are buying used. Have a mechanic check it out first. $200.00 now may save you $2000.00 later. And most of all, take your time. There are millions of boats out there, some great some really bad. You want a great one. Good fishing and happy boating!

Good advice. I have a friend that spent $7,600 on a 23 ft fiberform, used of course. Never had it inspected and three years later after much work, he's selling the trailer, with non-functioning boat thrown in for free. A painful lesson that could have been avoided. If new and you have a 12 year loan you sure better have picked the boat you REALLY want, because those payments will feel like a real burden if it isn't your "dream boat".
